CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Wild Unicorns Couldn’t Keep Her from This Date

Vega had dinner duty, and it wasn’t going to do her any good to trade chores with the person she usually utilized for such occasions since that person was Hazel, and they intended to leave school together.

It was just as well Vega ate dinner at the school anyway. She could never count on getting food that she was certain was organic, egg-free, dairy-free, and meat-free in the Morty Realm. It was more difficult to disguise her use of Casimir’s Hex-Detecting Spell while in a crowded restaurant filled with people who didn’t know about magic. Inevitably she would be put in a situation where she might accidentally ingest meat—or a human finger again—and like Cinderella fleeing a ball, she would have to return home before midnight so that no one caught her transforming with ghoul magic.

Even if Izidro Medina didn’t understand all the rules of the Unseen Realm since he’d been raised among Morties, it didn’t mean Vega wanted to expose him to her digestive distress. Vomiting and diarrhea were never on her list of first-date activities. Nor on her fifth-date or fifteenth-date activities.

Vega ate a small portion of soup and salad before cafeteria duty was over and she headed back to her room to change. Since she’d already executed her hair and makeup to perfection, it didn’t take her long to change into the beaded dress, show off her legs with hose cut out in a lacy pattern, and top off her outfit with jewelry all in hues of red that complemented her crimson lipstick. She admired the ruby ring on her finger that she’d recently acquired. If the dust bunny had tried to wear it, she would have torn his paw off to get it back.

In order to be safe from releasing excess magic, Vega kept a wand within easy access in her beaded black purse. She used a spell to cleanse herself of errant energies and a charmed bracelet so that all surplus magic was funneled into the copper band. She could dispose of that magic later.

“Wow, you look so stylish,” Hazel commented as she walked into the room. “I didn’t realize we were going anyplace fancy.”

A towel was wrapped around Hazel. Her damp fur stuck out in multiple directions.

Vega stared at her in dismay. “You aren’t even dressed. We’re leaving in ten minutes.” High society of her parents’ station were often late to parties, but this wasn’t a party. This was a date. Vega had calculated the exact amount of time it would take to walk to the portal to leave this dimension, and from there to the rendezvous spot in the Morty Realm.

She wouldn’t tolerate a date being late, and she wouldn’t respect a man who allowed her to think so little of him that she showed up tardy—even if she had a perfectly valid excuse that she had been beautifying herself. Or in this case, that Hazel was the tardy one because it was a double date.

Vega eyed Hazel’s towel in vexation.
